Find Telegram Username by Phone Number: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
You have a phone number and want the Telegram account behind it. Type "find Telegram username by phone number" into a search engine and you mostly get bots, but you don't need them: Telegram gives you two official ways, saving the number as a contact or opening a t.me/+ link. It takes under a minute on any device. When it fails, the usual reason is that the person chose not to be found by number. Below: steps for iPhone, Android and desktop, a privacy-settings table that explains almost every dead end, and how to hide your own number.
Can you find someone on Telegram by phone number?
Yes, in most cases. Save the number in your phone's contacts with the country code, or open t.me/+ followed by the number. If the person is on Telegram and hasn't limited who can find them by number, their account and username appear. If they restricted it to their own contacts, nothing shows, and no tool can legitimately get around that.
That limit is deliberate. Telegram gives every user two separate switches: one for who can see their number and one for who can find them by it. Once you understand those two switches, every "why can't I find them?" question has an answer.
Method 1: save the number to contacts (iPhone, Android, desktop)
This is the official way to find a Telegram account by phone number, and it works on every platform. Telegram checks the contacts you add against its users. If there's a match and their settings allow it, the person appears in your Telegram contacts with their profile.
Always use the international format. A local number like 050 123 4567 may match nobody, while +380 50 123 4567 finds the right account. The exact buttons shift slightly between app versions, but the path is the same everywhere:
Added the number to your phone's address book but Telegram doesn't see it? Check two things: contact sync is on in Telegram's privacy settings, and the app has permission to read contacts in your phone's own settings.
Step 1: Copy the number with the country code
+44, +1, +380 and so on. Drop the leading 0 of the local format.
Step 2: Add it as a new contact
Contacts tab → +, or menu → Contacts → Add contact on desktop.
Step 3: Open the contact in Telegram
A profile appears only if their privacy settings allow it.
Step 4: Check the username
Shown under the name in the profile, when they've set one.
iPhone: open the Contacts tab, tap + in the top corner, enter a name and the full number, then tap Create. You can also add the number in the iOS Contacts app; Telegram picks it up if contact sync is on.
Android: open the menu (☰) → Contacts, tap the round add-contact button, enter the name and number, and confirm with the check mark.
Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux): open the menu → Contacts → Add contact, type the name and number, and click Create.
The result: if the account appears, open it. You'll see the name they chose, their photo and bio if they share them, and their @username if they have one.
Method 2: the t.me/+ phone number link
Telegram supports links built from a phone number. Type t.me/+ followed by the full number, with no spaces or dashes, into a browser or any chat: for example t.me/+447700900123. The link opens a chat with that person straight away, without saving them as a contact first.
It follows exactly the same privacy rule as Method 1. [Telegram's own FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq) says the link works only if the person's settings let others find them by phone number. So it's a quick test, not a back door. If the link opens nothing, Method 1 won't help either.
One tip for sales and support teams: the link is handy for your own profile too. Put t.me/+ with your business number on a website or email signature, and customers can open a chat in one tap.

Why Telegram can't find someone by phone number
When a lookup fails, it's usually one of the settings below, or one of the simpler causes listed after the table. They live in Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number. "Who can see my phone number" controls whether the number shows on the profile. When that's set to Nobody, a second option appears: "Who can find me by my number", with Everybody or My Contacts.
"My Contacts" here means people they saved, not people who saved them. That's why you can have someone's number and still see nothing: you're in their phone book only if they put you there.
No country code. Saved as a local number, it may match the wrong account or none.
Different number. Many people sign up with a work SIM, an old number or an anonymous +888 number bought on Fragment.
Contact sync is off on your phone, so Telegram never sees the contact you added in the phone's address book.
Not on Telegram, or the account was deleted.

Can't find them by number? What to do instead
When the lookup comes back empty, don't reach for a bot. The person has told Telegram they'd rather not be found by number, and the polite routes work better anyway.
Most of the time you already have another channel, since you got the number from somewhere. Use it to hand over your Telegram and let them decide.
Ask for their username. One SMS or call: "Is it OK if I message you on Telegram? What's your @?"
Send your own link. Share t.me/+ with your number, or t.me/ with your username, so they can start the chat.
Share your QR code. Telegram can show a QR code for your username in your profile; it's handy at meetings and events.

Example: from a business card to a Telegram chat
Say you met a kitchen fitter at a trade fair and kept his card: "Tom Reid, +44 7700 900456". You'd rather message than call, so you save the number as "Tom Reid kitchens" with the +44 prefix.
Telegram shows no match. Before assuming he isn't on Telegram, you try t.me/+447700900456 in the browser. Still nothing, which most likely means he limited who can find him by number, or signed up with another number. So you send a short SMS: "Hi Tom, we met at the fair on Saturday. Do you use Telegram? Here's mine: t.me/your_username." He writes back within the hour, and now the chat is on his terms.
The whole thing took three minutes and no third-party tool. That's the normal shape of a phone lookup: try, understand why it failed, then ask.
What you see once you find their Telegram account
A match shows the profile the person chose to share: display name, photo, bio and @username if they set one. "Last seen", profile photo and even the bio can each be limited to contacts, so a sparse profile doesn't mean you found the wrong person.
Being able to find someone doesn't always mean you can message them freely. Telegram lets people restrict messages from non-contacts, and Premium users can charge Telegram Stars for messages from strangers. If you're writing to someone new, say who you are and how you got their number in the first line. A cold "hi" from an unknown account usually gets ignored or reported.
Display name — shown as you saved it, with their own name visible in the profile.
@username — only if they created one; many people never do.
Photo, bio and last seen — each can be limited to contacts or nobody.
Phone number — you'll see it, since you saved it; others may not.
Found an account? Check it's the right person
A match isn't proof. Mobile carriers recycle numbers, so the account behind a number can belong to its previous owner, or to someone who registered a work SIM years ago. If the name and photo don't fit, assume it's someone else until they confirm.
Before you write anything personal or send a document, confirm who's on the other side:
Compare the name and photo with what you know, keeping in mind both can be hidden from non-contacts.
Check the bio and username for a company name or the city you expect.
Open your first message with context, such as "Hi Anna, it's Mark from the flat viewing on Friday", and wait for a reply that confirms it.
Never share payment details or codes with an account you found only by number.
Telegram phone lookup bots and "number search" sites: the risks
Search for a reverse phone lookup on Telegram and you'll find bots and sites promising "any number, full profile, instantly". Some simply run the contact method for you. Others pull from leaked databases and sell the results by subscription.
Both kinds cost you something. The first charges for what Telegram does for free. The second hands you data that may be stale or wrong, and using leaked personal data can put you in breach of data protection law. Many bots also ask you to share your contacts or phone number "to unlock results", and then your address book becomes their data.
These bots also come and go. When one gets blocked, the subscription you paid for disappears with it, along with any history of what you searched.

Is a Telegram phone number search legal?
Checking a number someone gave you, with Telegram's own contact feature, is ordinary use of the app. It shows only what the person chose to share and respects their settings.
Things change when numbers come from somewhere else. Buying leaked databases, scraping numbers from websites, or running thousands of numbers through lookups to build a marketing list means processing personal data. Under GDPR and similar laws you need a lawful basis for that, a clear purpose and a way to honour opt-outs. Unsolicited bulk messages can also get your account limited by Telegram's spam filters. If your aim is sales, it's safer and more effective to reply to people who publicly asked for what you offer.
How to hide your phone number on Telegram
The same settings work in reverse. If you don't want strangers who have your number to find your account, change two options and add a username so the right people can still reach you.
Remember the one thing no setting can undo: anyone who already has your number saved will still see it. Hiding it protects you from people who don't have it yet, such as members of the groups you join. You can also add exceptions, for example "Always allow" for coworkers.
If the number itself is the problem, for example it's been posted publicly, you can move your account to a new number in Settings without losing your chats.
Your username isn't permanent either. You can change or remove it any time in Settings, so it's safe to create one just for work.

If you're looking up numbers to build a prospect list, the method above will frustrate you. Cautious people are the hardest to find, and a list of usernames says nothing about who needs what you sell right now.

Will the person know I looked up their number?
No. Telegram sends no notification when you save someone's number or open a t.me/+ link. They only find out once you message them: then they see your name and profile, and your number too if they have it saved or your privacy settings show it.
Why can't I find someone on Telegram by their number?
The most common reasons: they set "Who can find me by my number" to My Contacts, the number was saved without the country code, they registered with a different or anonymous number, or they don't use Telegram at all. Only the country code is yours to fix; the rest can't be bypassed legitimately.
Does Telegram show my phone number to other people?
